Jose Salazar: A Concrete Opportunity

ANTIOCH — Many people immigrate to the United States hoping to find professional opportunity, but for Jose Salazar, it was waiting for him when he arrived. “My older brother came to the U.S. before me and established himself as a concrete contractor,” he explains. “So, when I left Mexico at the age of 20, I already had a job lined up working for him. I found that I liked concrete work, so I stuck with it. Eventually, I got my license, and in 1994, I started my own company.”

Today, as owner of Paradigm Concrete & Construction, Inc., Jose says his favorite part of his job is interacting with people. “I appreciate the employees and customers I work with on a daily basis. I consider many of them friends and family, and I enjoy the camaraderie we share.”

A resident of Contra Costa County (where he lives with his wife, Margarita), Jose expresses his appreciation for its central proximity. “My business is located in Antioch, so we’re very centrally located with regard to the rest of the Bay Area. This enables us to service a large area that includes Contra Costa, Alameda and Marin Counties, as well as San Francisco.”

Outside of work, Jose takes every opportunity to visit new places. “My favorite activity is traveling,” he affirms. “I go to Mexico pretty often to visit friends and family, and I also own timeshares all over the U.S.” When he’s not traveling, Jose likes to spend quality time with his three daughters and four grandchildren. “We have a lot of family in Contra Costa County, so there are plenty of barbeques and get-togethers. Sometimes I’ll even hire a Mariachi band to liven things up.”

In regard to his professional career, Jose espouses a simple philosophy. “Take care of your customers and make sure they’re happy,” he advises. “Whenever I get a complaint from a customer—which isn’t often—I do everything in my power to make sure they’re satisfied. By making sure no customer gets left behind, I’ve been able to build a loyal clientele base and a strong reputation for our business.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Jose says he’d spend more time traveling. “As much as I travel now, there are still plenty of places I haven’t been to. Most of all, I want to travel through Europe. I’ve been to Spain, but I still haven’t seen Italy, France or Germany, so that would be my first destination.”
