Joao Nicolau: Laying the Groundwork
By Caitlyn Stair, Diamond Certified Research Reporter
Joao Nicolau has always been drawn to the rhythm and precision of construction, where every step builds toward something lasting. As a foundation contractor, he blends skill, speed, and attention to detail to make homes and buildings stronger and safer.
Joao first became involved in construction in his home country, Brazil, and carried that passion with him when he moved to the United States. He began working in the construction industry in Philadelphia in 1998, gradually gaining hands-on experience in foundations, sidewalks and driveways. “I started doing concrete by doing a lot of flat work and basement walls in Philadelphia,” he affirms. “Almost all the houses there had basement walls that we would work on.”
In 2001, Joao moved to California and spent some time working as a truck driver, but construction was always in his blood. He waited for the right moment to start his own foundation contracting firm, and in 2007, Dimension Construction Inc was born.
As owner, Joao oversees every project from start to finish, ensuring each step is executed properly. “When I start a job, I like to see the process from beginning to end,” he says. “Everything is prepared, from demolition to excavation to forming and finishing. There’s nothing better than starting a job, guiding it every step of the way and seeing it done correctly. Watching the process unfold and seeing the finished result—it’s a great feeling every time.”
Since moving to Pinole in 2001, Joao has built a life rooted in community. He lives with his wife, Cynthia; their two children, Kai and Joshua; and their dog, Galaxy. “I love Pinole for the weather and its central location,” he says. “It’s not too hot and it’s close to everything I need. My wife and I have thought about moving, but we couldn’t. We want our kids to stay near their friends and go to school here.” Outside of work, Joao enjoys riding his motorcycle, boating on the lake, and hosting barbecues with family and friends.
Joao is driven by the challenge of doing each job correctly, keeping a hands-on approach and a close eye on every detail. “I’m motivated to keep improving and making sure every job meets the highest standard,” he reflects. “Being part of every step of the process ensures the customer is happy, and that’s always my goal.”
Joao believes true craftsmanship comes from accountability and ownership. “Construction is about more than just showing up; it’s about being involved from start to finish, making decisions when needed and ensuring the job is done right,” he offers. “That’s what our clients appreciate most—they know I’m here for them every step of the way.”
Ask Me Anything!
Q: If you could immediately travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
A: Either Greece or Portugal. Greece looks beautiful and in Portugal they speak my native language.
Q: Do you play soccer?
A: I play a little. Growing up, we played all the time by the lake. Soccer is in my DNA, although I didn’t play as competitively as my kids do now—they have games almost every week.
Q: What’s your earliest memory?
A: Opening toys on Christmas morning.
Q: What are your favorite fruits?
A: Guava and mango. Those were the fruits we had in our backyard in Brazil. I ate guava off the trees and even on pizza.
