Ulises Alcocer: A Moving Experience

SAN RAFAEL — When Ulises Alcocer got into the moving business in his teens, he didn’t realize he was taking his first steps toward a lifelong career. “Growing up, my uncle worked for a major van line,” he remembers. “As a teenager, I helped out with things like packing and moving furniture, and after high school, I continued to work on and off for the company. In 2007, I decided to get serious about moving as a full-time career, so I got my Class A license and started doing long-distance moves all over the West Coast.”

Eventually, Ulises decided it was time to strike out on his own, and in 2013, he opened a franchise of the nationwide company You Move Me. “What attracted me to You Move Me is that they focus 100 percent on the customer,” he explains. “They’re really trying to revamp the moving industry and make moving a more fun, customer-centered experience, and I love being a part of that.”

A lifetime resident of the San Jose area, Ulises expresses his appreciation for life in the Bay Area. “I love it here—I’ve traveled all over the world and there’s no place like it,” he says. “There’s so much culture and things are always progressing, especially here in the Silicon Valley, so there’s an endless amount of new opportunities.”

Outside of work, Ulises engages in a variety of active pastimes, from outdoor pursuits to professional sports. “I enjoy going hiking and kayaking at state parks like Yosemite, as well as attending local sporting events,” he affirms. “Whether it’s baseball, basketball or football, I love all the Bay Area teams equally.” Additionally, Ulises devotes a share of his time to charitable endeavors. “My family has always done a lot of volunteering, and that’s something I’ve continued to stay involved with. In addition to volunteering at local animal shelters with my nieces and the Salvation Army with my sister, I like helping out with food and clothing drives during the holidays.”

In regard to his professional career, Ulises emphasizes the importance of the moving experience. “People move for a variety of reasons—one person may have just bought their first home while another may have just lost theirs—so regardless of the situation, my role is to be there for every customer,” he says. “The way I see it, I’m not just moving their furniture and possessions; I’m moving them. It’s a good feeling to know I’ve gone beyond the nuts and bolts of the job and really taken care of the customer.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Ulises says he’d spend more time volunteering in his community. “I find it very rewarding to make a difference in the lives of others. In addition to benefitting the people you’re helping, I think it benefits you by making you happier and healthier. Plus, I believe what goes around comes around, so I like to pay it forward.”
