Gateway Roofing &amp; Waterproofing, Inc. is a San Francisco-based roofing and waterproofing firm that serves residential and commercial clients throughout the Bay Area. The company's main focus is repairing and installing all varieties of roofs, including modified bitumen, tar and gravel, shingle, tile and metal. It also works with gutters and downspouts and installs skylights, sun tunnels, siding, waterproof patios and decks. According to owner Vernal Lee, Gateway Roofing &amp; Waterproofing's team is one of the most experienced in the Bay Area roofing industry. Most of the crew members have between 15 and 20 years' experience in the field and have been with the company since it was founded in 2004. The same foreman heads up every job, says Mr. Lee, so the team works efficiently with each other. Gateway Roofing &amp; Waterproofing is serious about customer service. "When customers call, they almost always get a person, not a machine or voicemail," says Mr. Lee. "We're always here for them." Mr. Lee is proud that 95 percent of his company's business comes from referrals of previous customers. "That demonstrates the level of satisfaction our customers experience with the work we've done. When a new customer calls, they've already decided they're going to hire us."

Q: How long will my roofing job take? A: Repair work can usually be completed in one day. A complete roof replacement on a typical house usually takes two days. Commercial buildings may take a week or more. Q: What’s roofing ventilation and why is it important? A: Roofing ventilation is the continuous flow of air through an attic space. It’s essential to dissipate heat and protect your building from moisture. Improperly ventilated attic spaces can create temperatures of up to 150 degrees, which can damage shingles. They can also cause your air conditioner to work harder, increasing your utility bills. Excess moisture can reduce the efficiency of insulation and cause rot, mold, mildew and paint blisters. Q: What should I do to prepare for my roofing job? A: Remove pictures, plates, and other items from the walls—vibrations and shaking can cause them to fall. Also, move potted plants and other portable items away from the perimeter of the building. Q: What kind of warranty do you provide? A: California requires that roofing contractors give a two-year warranty, but we go further and provide a 10 to 12-year warranty on the roofs we install. There are rarely any problems with our roofs, but if you encounter one, call us and we’ll fix it.

When hiring a roofing contractor, don’t be afraid to ask questions. “You should immediately address anything you don’t understand,” says Vernal Lee, owner of Gateway Roofing &amp; Waterproofing, Inc. in San Francisco. “A good roofing company should answer every question and communicate openly with their customers. You have a right to know what you’re getting.” Mr. Lee says the best way to find a quality roofer is through personal referrals. Ask your friends, family and coworkers if they’ve had roofing work done in the past. If they have, find out what company they used and ask if they were satisfied. Mr. Lee says homeowners can tell a lot about a roofer by how detailed their proposal is. “You want someone who’s very detailed oriented. It’s a good sign if the proposal comes with a plan, schedule or timeline that explains exactly what work needs to be done and what areas need special attention.” When it comes to maintenance tips, Mr. Lee says to first ensure you’ve received a quality installation. “If the roof was installed properly, most of the time it doesn’t need any maintenance. If it’s in place and waterproof, it’s okay.” A few times a year, you should clear gutters, downspouts and any odd areas where leaves and plant matter can collect and cause water to pool and damage your roof.
