Abosufian Merzayee: Raising Expectations
By Caitlyn Stair, Diamond Certified Research Reporter
For Abosufian Merzayee, roofing is about more than protecting a house from the elements—it’s about giving homeowners confidence in the people they hire. As the owner of Roof Express, he has built his approach around quality workmanship, clear communication and following through on his commitments.
Abosufian’s career in the trades began in 2008, when he started working in the construction industry in his native Afghanistan. Over the next several years, he gained experience on a variety of projects before coming to the United States in 2017. That background eventually led him to roofing, where he saw an opportunity to address some common issues. “I noticed that many homeowners were frustrated with delays, unclear estimates and poor follow-ups,” he explains. “I knew there was an opportunity to build a roofing company that focused not only on quality workmanship, but also on customer service and transparency.”
In 2021, Abosufian put that vision into action with Roof Express. Drawing on his construction experience, he focused on building a specialized roofing company and developing a team that could serve homeowners throughout the Bay Area. Today, he says one of the most rewarding aspects of his work is taking a problematic roof and turning it into something dependable.
Abosufian says a successful roofing project involves much more than the finished product. “The key to customer satisfaction is making sure the client feels confident and taken care of every step of the way. It’s not only about installing a quality roof—it’s also about communicating clearly, showing up when we say we will, keeping jobsites clean and responding quickly when someone has a concern.”
Having lived and worked in two very different parts of the world, Abosufian has developed a particular appreciation for the Bay Area and its diverse communities. “Every city is a little different, so each project has its own challenges, but it also means there’s a strong sense of community here,” he says. “I find it very rewarding to see my business continue to grow through referrals and repeat customers.”
Outside of work, Abosufian enjoys staying active and spending time with a close-knit group of friends, several of whom also work at Roof Express. They regularly go to the gym, swim, and travel outside the area in search of rivers and other places to spend time outdoors. He says working alongside friends has reinforced his belief in maintaining respect and accountability within a team. “We support each other, but we also have to be honest, responsible, and focused on doing what’s best for the company and our clients.”
Ultimately, Abosufian lives his life and runs his business with the same set of values: honesty, hard work, responsibility and respect for people. “I believe that if you give someone your word, you should do your best to keep it,” he offers.
Ask Me Anything!
Q: What’s the first thing you’d do if you could retire tomorrow?
A: I would probably travel and spend more time with my family, but I think I’d still be involved in the business in some way.
Q: What’s your favorite thing to do on a rainy day?
A: Relax at home and catch up on things I normally don’t have time for. I also keep an eye on our communications in case a customer has a roofing emergency.
Q: Coffee or tea?
A: Green tea.
Q: Would you rather be somewhere cold or somewhere hot?
A: Somewhere cold. I was born and raised around tall mountains with a lot of snow, so I love it.
