How to Spot Roof Decking Damage

Your roof’s shingles may get most of the attention, but the decking underneath is just as important to the integrity of your roofing system. Fortunately, there are a few warning signs you can look for before decking problems get out of hand.

Start by checking your attic (if it’s safely accessible). Discoloration on the underside of the roof decking can indicate that water has been getting where it shouldn’t. Visible moisture is an even bigger warning sign, so if you notice any, have a roofer inspect the area as soon as possible.

Proper attic ventilation is also important. When a roof doesn’t have adequate ventilation, excess heat and moisture can contribute to problems over time. Repeated leaks can likewise weaken the decking beneath the roofing material.

If damaged or deteriorated decking is discovered during a roof replacement, don’t simply cover it with a new roofing system. The decking provides the foundation for the materials above it, so poor sections should be replaced before the new roof is installed. Addressing the problem at this stage helps protect your investment and gives the new system a solid foundation.
