Carlos Bates: Lighting the Way
By Julie Deacon, Diamond Certified Research Writer
For Carlos Bates, a career in the electrical industry was almost destined. Growing up around construction because of his father (a carpenter), he developed a hands-on mindset and an appreciation for skilled trades. “My dad probably pushed me into being an electrician,” he laughs. “He always said it was the easiest way to go if you wanted to be in the trades. I started in 2002 and it has been a journey ever since.”
Carlos began his career at a small shop in Albany and later honed his residential skills by working on tract homes. “Residential work teaches you circuitry like nothing else,” he says. “It’s where you learn how everything connects and how to think ahead.” Carlos eventually returned to that small Albany company and built a lasting relationship with the owner, learning both technical and life lessons that stayed with him even after his mentor passed. “That relationship shaped a lot of how I approach my work and my team,” he says.
Seeking broader opportunities, Carlos joined the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, which exposed him to a wide variety of large-scale projects. From turbines along Highway 12 to refinery turnarounds, hospital systems and even the Moscone Center in San Francisco, he gained experience that few electricians see in a lifetime. “Union work gave me a level of expertise that I didn’t even know I needed,” he says. “It taught me how to adapt, problem-solve and understand a little bit about everything in this trade.”
In 2009, Carlos established C. Bates Electric to provide comprehensive electrical services with an emphasis on top-notch customer care. His philosophy was simple: people over profit. “I learned that if you put the customer first, the response is always better,” he offers. Carlos’ approach reflects a balance of technical mastery, creative problem-solving and hands-on involvement. He prides himself on tackling challenging projects and tailoring every solution to the client’s needs.
Even though he spent time in Louisiana and completed a two-year tour in the Air Force as a nuclear weapons specialist, Carlos considers himself a lifelong Bay Area resident. Despite the demands of running a growing business largely on his own, he still makes time for hobbies like fishing, hunting and riding motorcycles. “I also love puzzles, whether it’s playing a domino game or figuring out a tricky wiring problem,” he adds. “It keeps my mind sharp and gives me balance.”
Whether he’s teaching his crew, solving complex electrical puzzles or mentoring aspiring electricians, Carlos approaches his work with discipline, curiosity and a dedication to excellence. “I love seeing my guys at work and making sure they’re doing things the right way,” he says. “That hands-on aspect keeps me going. It’s rewarding to see a project come together and know you helped make it happen.”
