A Simple Way to Check Your Home’s Electrical Grounding

Electrical grounding is one of the most important safety features of a home, but if your house was built before the 1960s, it may have outdated wiring that doesn’t meet modern standards. Fortunately, you can perform a simple preliminary check by using an inexpensive outlet tester that’s available at most hardware stores.

To use an outlet tester, simply plug it into an outlet and compare the light pattern to the instructions printed on the device. Because electrical upgrades are sometimes performed only in certain areas of a home, it’s a good idea to test multiple outlets rather than assuming the entire house is wired the same way.

If the tester shows anything other than the correct wiring pattern, it’s important to have the issue evaluated by a licensed electrician. A missing ground, reversed wiring or other electrical faults can create safety hazards. Taking a few minutes to test your outlets can provide valuable insight into your home’s electrical system and help you identify potential problems before they become serious concerns.
