Lamar Spalding: An Unlikely Inspiration

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

DUBLIN — With a background in product management, Lamar Spalding never expected to one day own a home repair business. However, in the course of renovating his own home, he was struck by an unlikely inspiration. “In 1989, I purchased a ‘fixer upper’ and spent the next seven years working on it,” he remembers. “During this time, I worked with a lot of contractors and was quite amazed at the inconsistency of my experiences. Some contractors were really organized and on top of things while others seemed like they were just winging it. This made it challenging to find the right professionals for the job, which made me think, ‘There has to be a better way.’”

Thus inspired, Lamar decided to take matters into his own hands and get involved in the home improvement industry. “Basically, I saw a need and realized I would be a good person to fill it,” he says. “I ended up purchasing an existing home repair company and completely reforming it. The biggest change I made was hiring contractors who were not only skilled in their work but could also establish the rapport necessary for clients to feel comfortable. This would ensure both workmanship and customer service were prioritized.”

Today, as president of All In One Home Services, Lamar says his favorite part of his job is helping his employees thrive. “I spend a great deal of time getting to know our contractors, becoming familiar with their particular strengths and lining them up with the right jobs. This helps me keep them happy, and I know if my contractors are happy, our clients will be as well.”

A resident of Dublin, Lamar spends his time outside of work on a variety of pastimes. “I like playing tennis, exercising and spending time with my two grown sons,” he details. “Most of all, I enjoy traveling. I typically travel four to six weeks out of the year and go all over the world. For instance, this year I have plans to visit Australia and Japan.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Lamar says he’d do some more traveling. “As I’m getting older, I’ve committed to adding one week of vacation time each year until I retire. Most of that I plan to spend traveling and seeing the world. Right now, I’m up to about six weeks.”

Robert Kaljian: A Natural Builder

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

CONCORD — For Robert Kaljian, a career in the construction industry was a natural fit. “I started doing construction work back in high school,” he remembers. “It came pretty naturally to me. I particularly enjoyed the process of diagnosing and solving problems.” Later, Robert ran a cabinet shop where he designed, built and sold custom cabinetry. However, as time went on, he began to think bigger. “I started to get more interested in trades like electrical and plumbing. In 2002, I got my contractor’s license and started doing home remodeling. In recent years, I’ve pared down the business to focus more on bathroom and kitchen remodeling, as well as handyman work.”

Today, as owner of Kaljian Construction Inc., Robert says his favorite part of his job is making his customers happy. “I enjoy helping my clients realize their visions and seeing them happy with their finished products. When I stop by a few months later and they’re still happy with what we did for them, it’s a very satisfying feeling.”

A resident of Clayton, Robert spends his time outside of work on a variety of active pastimes. “I enjoy being out and about, whether that’s mountain biking, skiing at Tahoe or going to concerts,” he details. “Skiing is probably my biggest hobby—I try to hit the slopes as much as I can during the season.”

In regard to his professional career, Robert credits much of his success to careful attention to detail. “When you pay attention to detail, it makes for a better-than-average result,” he affirms. “I learned a lot about that back when I was making custom cabinets. From the design to the actual construction, it required a lot of precision to ensure the final product turned out correct. I think the same principle applies to customer service—when you’re proactive about communication and planning, it makes the customer a lot happier.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Robert says he’d head to Lake Tahoe. “I spend a lot of time at Tahoe in the winter, but I’m not able to get up there as much during the summer because it’s my busiest season. So, if I were to retire tomorrow, I’d probably rent a cabin and go enjoy Tahoe for a couple of weeks.”

  • What To Ask References
Learning from Previous Handyman Service Company Customers in Contra Costa County

It’s best to choose a Diamond Certified handyman home repair service company because all certified companies have passed an in-depth ratings process that most other companies can’t pass. If you want quality from a handyman home repair service company in Contra Costa County and the greater Bay Area, you can have confidence choosing a Diamond Certified company. Diamond Certified reports are available online for all certified companies. And you’ll never be fooled by fake reviews. That’s because all research is performed in live telephone interviews of actual customers.

If you can’t find a Diamond Certified handyman home repair service company within reach, you’ll have to do some research on your own. If you do, it’s wise to call some references provided by your handyman home repair service company. Keep in mind, though, that references provided to you by the handyman home repair service company are not equal in value to the large random sample of customers surveyed during the Diamond Certified ratings process. That’s because references given to customers from companies are cherry-picked instead of randomly selected from all their customers. So the contractors will likely give you a few customers to call that they know are satisfied.

If you do call references on your own, specifically ask for a list of the company’s 10 most recent customers. This will help avoid them giving you the names of only customers they know were satisfied.

    • Would you recommend this handyman home repair service company to your family and friends?
    • Did the handyman home repair service company technician show up on time?
    • What type of repair did you have done on your home?
    • Did the handyman home repair service company technician act and appear professional?
    • Were you satisfied with the service from the (handyman home repair service company)?
    • If you need your home repairs in the future, will you consider going back to this handyman home repair service company?
    • Was the handyman home repair service company’s work overpriced or reasonable?

  • How To Work With
Benefiting the Most from Home Repair Companies in Contra Costa County

After you have found a local handyman home repair service company in Contra Costa County that meets your needs the best, it’s the perfect time to ask for a written contract. This contract should include several details: the cost of the repair, the cost of labor, the repair needed on your home, the warranty or guarantee, and the date of the repair.

Make sure that you understand the terms and limitations before you sign the contract. Because it protects both your interests as well as the interests of the handyman home repair service company, you want to make sure that it fully covers all aspects. It is important that you never sign an incomplete estimate or a blank contract.

If you have verbal agreements or special requests with the handyman home repair service company in Contra Costa County, be sure to write these agreements in. This ensures that you will get the service that you expect. Also make sure to include any related issues. For example, how will the handyman home repair service company handle unexpected damages? Sometimes, regardless of how careful your technician promises to be, unexpected damage can occur during the repair. But if you are proactive, you can protect your property. Schedule a walk through with the company supervisor before the work begins and conduct a pre-work inspection of your property. Photograph the areas that will be worked on by the handyman company. Talk to the company representative about reasonable expectations for protecting your home and yard during the work.

Once you have reached an agreement with the handyman home repair service company, both parties should sign and date the contract. Be sure that the handyman home repair service company representative has a phone number where they can reach you at all times.
