Video: 2 Simple Ways to Maintain Your Garbage Disposal

with Joey McDaniel of Mr. Rooter Plumbing of Sonoma County

The tip we're gonna talk about today is garbage disposal maintenance and self-repair. So garbage disposals they have a reset button on the bottom of it, so if you ever go to kick it on and it makes a humming sound or it's just not working at all, sometimes that can indicate a jam or the reset button has engaged.

So the... It's a little red button on the very bottom of it. You can make sure the power's off, push that button, and then there's a Allen key that comes with every disposal. You put that, that little Allen key into the bottom, and you can move the blades around, and that should help unjam the garbage disposal. If you go to turn the garbage disposal back on after that and you still have no success or it's not turning on or draining properly, that's a good indication that it's time to replace that disposal.

If everything's working fine, you can eliminate the bad breath from your garbage disposal. Basically what you do is you take a tray full of ice from your freezer, dump it and pack it into the garbage disposal. You wanna fill up that sink bowl about a quarter way and then turn the garbage disposal on and just slowly feed the ice into it. That lifts the fats, the oils and grease from the interior side of the garbage disposal and helps to eliminate odor. Fats, oils, and grease are designed to come off with dish soap regular hand washing and/or from your dishwasher, which ties into that garbage disposal.
