Susan Crane: Innovation With Intention
By Caitlyn Stair, Diamond Certified Research Reporter
Susan Crane’s approach to real estate has never been just about buying and selling properties. For her, it’s about creating meaningful experiences, leveraging technology, and building a business that reflects both her expertise and integrity.
Susan first got involved in real estate while working as an assistant to the CEO of a commercial real estate brokerage in San Francisco called Arroyo & Coates. Over the next decade, she gained experience managing HOAs and luxury residential buildings, learning the full spectrum of the industry from the ground up.
Along the way, Susan paused to focus on raising her two children, an experience she describes as “really fun” and formative. In 2018, she stepped up to a new challenge and joined Salesforce in a tech role focused on cybersecurity despite having no engineering background. “Getting into such a large, tech-forward company really set the stage, so when my husband went live with Morley Fredericks Real Estate, I was able to step in and have a greater impact,” she says.
Today, Susan serves as the firm’s CFO and focuses on combining her operational expertise with technological innovation. “Joining after my stint in tech has launched the company in a way that neither of us could have predicted,” she says. She adds that her background enables Morley Fredericks Real Estate to leverage technology in ways that accelerate growth and improve client experiences, while her ongoing master’s program in real estate at Georgetown University allows her to balance academic insights with real-world application. A recent trip to Rio de Janeiro for the SAHIC Latin America & The Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Investment Forum highlighted this perspective, giving her a global lens on real estate trends, resilience strategies and asset performance.
Susan is passionate about seeing ideas come to life and helping her team—and the real estate industry—embrace change. She says she’s energized by how AI and other tools are transforming real estate without replacing people, breaking down barriers for new entrepreneurs and raising the standard for service. “The biggest rush has been having ideas for how things are going to be successful and seeing them pan out, especially with this use of technology.”
For Susan, attentiveness to her clients is a top priority, and it all starts with communication. “We over-communicate,” she affirms. “We share stories, listen and take the time to understand what our clients need so we can meet them there.” While alignment often comes naturally, she’s quick to step in when it doesn’t, ensuring clarity every step of the way.
Originally from Arcata, Susan moved to the Bay Area to attend Saint Mary’s College of California in Moraga and eventually made Marin County home, where she lives in San Rafael with her husband, Steve. “I love this area because it’s only 40 minutes away from the beach, the mountains and wine country,” she says. Outside of work, Susan enjoys photography, travel, cooking and reading.
Susan embraces life’s challenges and the opportunities they bring in everything she does. “I’m comfortable with being uncomfortable,” she details. “I prefer to put myself in positions where I don’t necessarily know what to do, and I’m OK with asking questions or seeking clarity. That’s how you grow, whether in business, travel or personal pursuits.”
In the end, Susan’s philosophy comes down to eliminating uncertainty. She believes transparency and clarity should be a given, not a luxury. “You should never have to wonder about anything,” she says. “There’s no need to guess anymore.”
Ask Me Anything!
Q: Have you ever read a book more than once?
A: I read a lot of Stephen King books when I was younger, and when I go back and reread them, I always get something new out of his stories.
Q: If you could immediately travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
A: Mallorca. It’s a big destination for Europeans and it just seems like a beautiful place to explore. I’d also love to visit parts of the coast of Africa.
Q: What’s your favorite holiday?
A: Easter. The rabbits, the chocolate, the flowers…I just love everything about it. It’s not even really about religion for me—I think it’s the feeling of spring and coming out of winter.
Q: If you could time-travel, would you go to the past or the future?
A: I’d go to the late 1800s into the early 1900s. It was such a fascinating time of innovation, both in the U.S. and globally. So much of what was developed then still influences how we live today.
Q: What’s your favorite genre of movies?
A: Anything set in that same late 1800s to early 1900s time period. And honestly, if it has an English accent, I’m probably going to watch it.
