Steve Crane: Closing With Commitment
By Caitlyn Stair, Diamond Certified Research Reporter
A simple idea has always guided Steve Crane’s career: Effort should lead somewhere. That belief ultimately led him to real estate, where he has built a business centered on connection, accountability and helping clients turn opportunity into reality.
Steve entered the real estate industry in 1998, starting as a broker focused on multifamily properties in San Francisco and the surrounding areas. Before that, he worked as a golf professional and became a head pro at a private East Bay club, where he was exposed to high-level clientele and began rethinking his career path. “I met people who had needs…people who had money,” he recalls. “I just decided that my time would be better spent working toward something where my level of effort was commensurate with my earnings. Real estate fit that goal.”
That mindset led to a defining turning point in 2013. While competing in the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc—a 104-mile endurance race through Italy, Switzerland and France—Steve made the decision to go out on his own. “At about mile 90, I thought to myself, ‘If I can do this, I’m not working for anybody other than myself when I get back home,’” he recalls. Shortly after returning, he packed up his desk and launched Morley Fredericks Real Estate Inc.
The name “Morley Fredericks” is rooted in Steve’s family. “Morley is my grandfather’s name and my middle name, and Fredericks is my son’s grandfather’s name and his middle name,” he explains. “It’s a way to honor the people who gave me the opportunity to learn and experience life. I definitely haven’t done it on my own.”
Today, Steve primarily focuses on brokerage and property management services, working closely with both property owners and tenants. His hands-on leadership style keeps him deeply involved in every level of the business. “I think my favorite part is connecting with our clients,” he says. “I stay involved and never take my eye off the ball.”
Steve’s passion for real estate comes from its accessibility and potential to create opportunity. For him, the most rewarding part of the work is helping clients bring their ideas to life. “Real estate can be accessible to everyone with the right sacrifice and dedication,” he says. “Anyone who is persistent has the opportunity to succeed. Creating value for people—having a concept and helping them realize it—is something measurable that gives them a positive experience.”
Steve lives in San Rafael with his wife, Susan, who also serves as Morley Fredericks Real Estate’s CFO. Originally from Chicago, he moved to California more than three decades ago and now appreciates the Bay Area for its incredible weather and cultural diversity. “I love the access to music, art and nature,” he affirms. “We basically have everything at our fingertips.”
When he finds time to unwind, Steve gravitates toward live music, performing arts and fitness. “I like going to concerts whenever I have the opportunity, and I really enjoy watching ballet and dance performances,” he details. “I’m also a fitness geek, so I still enjoy running, rowing and weightlifting.”
At the core of Steve’s professional philosophy is a commitment to accountability. “If you tell me what you’re going to do, I’m going to hold you to it, and I do the same for myself,” he says. “It’s about dedication, persistence and making sure you follow through.”
