Bill Gibson: On Solid Ground

For Bill Gibson, soil repair isn’t a “one size fits all” trade—it’s an applied discipline that requires careful evaluation of what’s happening beneath every property. As vice president of Engineered Soil Repairs, Inc., he has built his career around the belief that lasting solutions come from understanding conditions first and designing fixes second.

Bill’s entry into the soil repair industry was direct and practical—after earning his civil engineering degree, he immediately stepped into hands-on fieldwork. “I knew I wanted to work in construction, so I got involved right out of college,” he recalls. “My first job included soil-related repairs that were similar to what we do now.”

That early exposure quickly shaped the trajectory of Bill’s career. After five years in the industry, he and several colleagues decided to build something of their own. In 1992, they launched Engineered Soil Repairs and quickly became known for their technical precision. “Not all companies use engineering judgment when they’re coming up with fixes,” says Bill. “There are all types of soils in the Bay Area, so you have to engineer the solution based on the specific soil you’re dealing with.”

Bill says communication is just as important as technical design in the soil repair business. “When I’m on a jobsite and the client asks me a question, I take the time to explain what’s going on and even draw pictures for them. It’s often easier to understand a drawing than a verbal explanation.”

For Bill, the simple act of problem solving is the most rewarding part of his work. “I love working with people and using my engineering knowledge to come up with solutions to their issues,” he affirms. “It’s what keeps me engaged.”

A resident of the Bay Area since 1972, Bill currently resides in Alamo with his wife, Tess, and his daughter, Sammy, who currently attends UC Santa Barbara. “I like the small-town feel of Alamo,” he says. “The houses are spread out a little bit, so we’re not congested.” Outside of work, he likes to unwind by traveling and doing outdoor activities like golfing and skiing.  

At the core of Bill’s professional and personal approach is a commitment to integrity. “I just try to be fair and do the right thing with the people in my life,” he says. “It’s important to be honest.”

Q: What’s your favorite genre of music?
A: I listen to all types of music, but I really enjoy classic rock like Van Halen and UFO.

Q: Do you prefer being somewhere hot or somewhere cold?
A: Somewhere hot. I love being on the beach.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to do on a rainy day?
A: Just stay inside and relax.

Q: Are you an early bird or a night owl?
A: I’m a little bit of both, even though I start work before 7am.

Q: What’s the most death-defying feat you’ve ever attempted?
A: I jumped off a 30-foot cliff in Hawaii with my daughter. She wasn’t afraid at all.
