Richard Landen: A Life of Learning

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SANTA ROSA — After growing weary of the rigors of upper management, Richard Landen decided to reroute his professional path. Nearly three decades later, he has no regrets about his choice. “I used to be a manager at Circuit City, back when that store was still in business,” he recounts. “They kept moving me from one store to another, and I finally got tired of it, so I decided to get out of management and go into a different department. I ended up transferring to the appliance sales department—that was in 1991, and I’ve been selling appliances ever since. I’ve been working at Asien’s Appliance since 2003.”

When asked about his favorite part of his job, Richard says it’s helping customers. “I have a lot of fun helping customers find what they’re looking for and working with them to complete their kitchens. Typically, they come in with rough ideas of what they want, and I basically get to fine-tune those ideas and help them find products that will meet their needs.”

A resident of Windsor (where he lives with his wife, Julie), Richard spends his time outside of work on a variety of active pastimes. “Julie and I enjoy getting out and having a good time, whether it’s going to a San Francisco Giants game or going kayaking at Lake Sonoma,” he details. “We also like working on home projects together and spending time with our three grown children.”

In regard to a personal philosophy, Richard says he’s a big proponent of lifelong learning. “I learn something new every day. I’ve always told my kids, ‘Every morning when I get up, I know I’m going to learn something new that day.’ I don’t know everything, nor do I want to know everything, but I enjoy the fact that I get to keep learning and growing all the time.”

  • What To Ask References
Questions to Ask When Interviewing Previous Appliance Showroom Customers in Sonoma County

It’s best to find a Diamond Certified appliance showroom because all certified companies have passed an in-depth ratings process that most other companies can’t pass. If you want quality from an appliance showroom in Sonoma County and the Greater Bay Area, you can have confidence choosing a Diamond Certified company. Diamond Certified reports are available online for all certified companies. And you’ll never be fooled by fake reviews. That’s because all research is performed in live telephone interviews of actual customers.

If you can’t locate a Diamond Certified appliance store within reach in Sonoma County, including the smaller cities of Agua Caliente, Alexander Valley, Bodega Bay, Forestville, Larkfield, Russian River and Sea Ranch, you’ll have to do some research on your own. If you do, it’s wise to call some references provided by your appliance showroom. Keep in mind, though, that references provided to you by the appliance showroom are not equal in value to the large random sample of customers surveyed during the Diamond Certified ratings process. That’s because references given to customers from companies are cherry-picked instead of randomly selected from all their customers. So the representatives will likely give you a few customers to call that they know are satisfied.

If you do call references on your own, specifically ask for a list of the company’s 10 most recent customers. This will help avoid them giving you the names of only customers they know were satisfied.

    • Did the appliance showroom deliver your new appliances? Did they show up on time?
    • What type of appliances did you purchase from the appliance showroom?
    • Were you satisfied with the service from the (appliance showroom name)?
    • If you need new appliances in the future, will you consider going back to this appliance showroom again?
    • Would you recommend this appliance showroom to your family and friends?

  • How To Work With
Before Signing the Contract With an Appliance Showroom in Sonoma County

Once you have found a local appliance showroom in Sonoma County, including in the larger cities of Sonoma, Cloverdale, Sebastopol, Cotati, and Guerneville, that meets your needs, itis the right time to request a written contract. This contract should include several details that are all written down: the price, the brand and type of appliances purchased, the warranty, and the delivery date if delivery is an option.

Before signing the contract, make sure you understand the terms and limitations. Carefully read through it as a signed contract is binding and should protect your interests as the interests of the appliance showroom. For this reason, never sign an incomplete estimate or a blank contract.

This is the time to write in any special requests or verbal agreements that you may have with the showroom. This will help ensure that you get the services you expect. Be sure to add any related issues that may not be covered by a standard contract such as how damages will be handled.

Sometimes, regardless of how careful your appliance showroom representative promises to be, damage can occur unexpectedly during delivery or installation. When you’ve reached an agreement, both the appliance showroom representative and you should sign and date the contract.

It’s the appliance showroom’s responsibility to show you quality appliances. But you play a big part in the success of your appliance showroom, too. Here are a few simple steps you can take to be a good customer when hiring a Sonoma County appliance showroom.

Most problems with local appliance showrooms occur because of a breakdown in communication. By being clear about your expectations and theirs, you can avoid most conflicts.
    • Ask your appliance showroom representative if you should call to check on the progress or if he will call you with updates regarding the delivery of your new appliances.
    • Be sure your service representative has a phone number where they can reach you at all times while they’re working with you. The work will move along more smoothly if your appliance showroom representative can reach you for any necessary updates or questions.
    • When your appliance showroom representative contacts you, return calls promptly to keep the appliance showroom’s delivery on schedule.
