Michael Grant: Precision and Purpose
By Julie Deacon, Diamond Certified Resarch Writer
Michael Grant’s plumbing career was shaped by an early exposure to construction in his native Jamaica and an appreciation for the structure and discipline behind skilled trade work. “I was introduced to construction at a very young age through my father, who is a general contractor,” he details. “I was expected to spend time on jobsites during school breaks, so I was constantly around the work. What stood out to me wasn’t just building in the general sense, but plumbing in particular.”
Michael was drawn to the precision behind plumbing work, which he still points to as a defining characteristic of the trade. “Plumbing isn’t random—it’s structured and intentional, from the way pipes are laid out to how everything functions as a system,” he says. “That level of order and accuracy made it fascinating to me.”
Michael ended up working in other industries over the years, but he returned to plumbing after moving to California and finding himself in a precarious situation. “I wasn’t actively working in plumbing at the time, but I had a water service issue at my home,” he explains. “I understood what needed to be done, but I didn’t have the tools or the setup to execute it myself. That experience reconnected me with the trade in a very practical way.”
Once he stepped back into the field, the familiarity returned quickly and he gained a renewed appreciation for the work itself. “That experience reconnected me with plumbing,” he affirms. “Once I stepped back into it, I realized how much I still enjoyed the process of solving problems with my hands and building systems that actually function in real life.”
From there, Michael began working alongside experienced professionals, gradually rebuilding his foundation through hands-on exposure and increasing responsibility on jobsites. That progression eventually led him to establish Albion Plumbing & Rooter, Inc. in 2007.
Today, Michael says his favorite part of his job is helping customers take their projects from design to reality. “They’ve already created the plan, so my role is to interpret it correctly and bring it into the physical world. That connection between design and execution is where the craft really lives.”
A resident of San Leandro since the early ’90s, Michael says he appreciates the East Bay’s stability when it comes to year-round plumbing work. “The weather here supports consistency. It allows us to stay active in the field without the interruptions that come with more extreme climates.”
Outside of work, Michael maintains a strong connection to soccer, both through his background as a former professional player in the Jamaica Premier League and his continued involvement through coaching and family. “Soccer has always been part of my life in one form or another,” he says. “Even though I’m no longer playing professionally, I still stay involved, especially through coaching and supporting my daughter’s involvement.”
At the core of Michael’s perspective is a steady sense of responsibility and craftsmanship that continues to guide his work. “To me, it’s about doing things properly and with intention,” he says. “If you’re going to do something, it should be done with care, precision and a full understanding of the responsibility behind it.”
