Christopher Dimmitt: Turning Complexity Into Clarity
By Caitlyn Stair, Diamond Certified Research Reporter
Christopher Dimmitt’s path into the HVAC industry wasn’t traditional. Before entering the trade in late 2020, he spent seven years working at REI, where he specialized in inventory management. That experience unexpectedly laid the groundwork for his future career. “As people in my field often say, ‘Widgets are widgets,’” he offers. “If they have numbers, you can track them, so it doesn’t really matter what they do.”
Christopher transitioned from managing inventory at REI to handling inventory for an HVAC company, but his role steadily expanded as he immersed himself in the industry. “As I grew more familiar with the parts and what they actually did, my function evolved over time,” he explains. “I went from pure inventory management to staging jobs, writing price books and marketing.”
Christopher credits much of his rapid growth to a combination of technical curiosity and hands-on learning. “I had very good on-the-job training, which helped a lot,” he recalls. “But at REI, I had to learn technical details about thousands of products, so honestly, getting into HVAC was much simpler.” He also took initiative outside of work and studied manufacturer resources, gathered information from vendors, and researched equipment specifications on his own.
In October 2022, Christopher joined Elevated Comfort at a pivotal stage in the company’s growth. Unlike the larger, more established HVAC company he previously worked for, Elevated Comfort offered something that immediately appealed to him: the opportunity to help shape the business from the ground up. “I jumped at the opportunity to help design the system rather than be beholden to it,” he says.
At the time, Elevated Comfort only had a few years under its belt, which gave Christopher the freedom to establish protocols and build processes from scratch. “The terms were basically, ‘You can do whatever you want,’” he recalls. “That creative freedom and the opportunity to see if I knew as much as I thought I did were extremely appealing to me.”
Christopher says the company’s family-oriented atmosphere also made an immediate impact. “It was a tighter-knit group from the get-go and people were trying to get better every day, so it was a super exciting environment. I imagine it’s what working at a tech startup feels like. You get to work with motivated people and leave your mark. There’s nothing like it.”
Today, Christopher’s role at Elevated Comfort continues to span multiple areas of the business, allowing him to bridge the gap between technical operations and customer communication. Although he doesn’t regularly work directly with homeowners, he often steps in when they need technical explanations about their HVAC systems. “One of the nice things about working at a small, family-owned company is that our job titles don’t necessarily define what we can and can’t do,” he says.
A resident of Marin County since 2014, Christopher currently lives in Novato with his wife, Samantha, their daughter, Ella, and their energetic rescue dog, Josie. Outside of work, he spends much of his free time trail running through the open spaces surrounding Novato. “Within a five-minute drive and a ten-minute walk, I can’t see houses anymore,” he details. “That’s super cool.”
Looking ahead, Christopher is excited about Elevated Comfort’s continued growth, particularly the expansion of its service department. He says the company recently hired a dedicated service department manager and is actively working to increase its technician team to better serve customers throughout the North Bay.
At the core of Christopher’s approach is a belief in adaptability, technical knowledge and clear communication. Whether he’s developing internal systems or helping homeowners navigate complicated equipment issues, he believes understanding the full picture makes all the difference. “It’s really nice to be able to turn a stressful situation into something positive,” he reflects.
Ask Me Anything!
Q: Would you rather be somewhere cold or somewhere hot?
A: Somewhere hot. Hot weather is a lot easier to control than freezing feet.
Q: What are your favorite movie genres?
A: Sci-fi and fantasy. “Interstellar” is one of my favorites, and I also love the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy.
Q: Coffee or tea?
A: Sencha green tea. It has just enough caffeine to wake me up without making my hands shake.
Q: Are you a dog person or a cat person?
A: A dog person. Our dog, Josie, is my running buddy.
Q: If you could time-travel, would you go to the past or the future?
A: The past. I’ve always been fascinated by medieval Europe and the political dynamics of that era, even though I wouldn’t want to live there permanently.
