When selecting plumbing fixtures for a kitchen or bathroom renovation, you typically have to balance three factors: appearance, durability and budget. While it’s natural to focus on how a fixture looks, two similar-looking products can differ significantly in their materials, construction and finish quality. Here’s how to prioritize your budget:
Invest in frequently used fixtures. It’s usually worthwhile to invest in quality when it comes to faucets, particularly shower and tub valves that are installed behind walls. Once these components are enclosed behind tile, replacing them can be difficult and expensive. A well-made fixture is more likely to perform reliably and resist peeling, tarnishing, and pitting.
Save on nonessential features. If you need to reduce costs, look at fixtures that receive less use and features that aren’t necessary. For example, you might choose a basic laundry room faucet or eliminate a luxury addition like a kitchen pot filler. This will allow you to direct more of your budget toward fixtures that would be disruptive or expensive to replace.
Consider the fixture’s long-term appearance. Polished chrome, polished nickel and satin nickel finishes tend to remain timeless, while matte black, satin brass and satin bronze finishes are more trend-driven. Since your plumbing fixtures may remain in place for 20 years or longer, choose a design that you’ll be comfortable living with for the long term.
