4 Ways to Extend the Life of Your Faucets and Sinks

Even high-quality faucets and sinks require regular care to maintain their appearance and performance. Hard water can leave behind calcium deposits that become increasingly difficult to remove, while improper cleaning products may damage certain materials and finishes. Follow these steps to protect your faucets and sinks:

1. Regularly wipe faucets after using them. When water is allowed to dry on a faucet, it leaves behind mineral residue that can gradually accumulate. Regularly wiping your faucets will help prevent stubborn water spots and calcium buildup.

2. Use the right cleaning products. Avoid abrasive cleaners unless the manufacturer confirms they’re safe for that specific material. For example, abrasives may be appropriate for some porcelain surfaces, but they can scratch composite sinks and damage decorative faucet finishes.

3. Set realistic expectations for stainless steel. Stainless steel sinks naturally develop scratches with everyday use, so maintaining a flawless showroom appearance may not be realistic. However, using a cleaner that’s specifically formulated for stainless steel can help preserve the surface and keep it looking its best.

4. Address hard water. If your home has particularly hard water, a whole-house filter or water softener can help reduce mineral buildup on your faucets, plumbing components, and water-using appliances.
