The Keys to Long-Lasting Hardscaping

When you invest in a new patio or other hardscaping, it’s easy to focus on the finished surface, but many hardscape failures actually stem from what’s happening underneath. Proper preparation and drainage are essential for keeping concrete and pavers stable over the long term. Here are two important factors to address during the installation:

Build a stable sub-base. Before concrete or pavers are installed, the area needs a properly prepared foundation. A four- to six-inch layer of compacted base rock will provide the stability needed to support the hardscape and help prevent problems down the road.

Plan for proper drainage. The existing grades of your yard should be evaluated before installation to determine where water will flow. The patio can then be pitched to direct water toward a favorable location, or surface drains can be incorporated when necessary.

Ultimately, water should be directed away from your home and prevented from collecting underneath your patio or in other undesirable areas. Taking the time to address both the foundation and drainage during installation can help your hardscaping remain stable for years.
