One of the most important steps you can take to ensure a successful construction project is conducting a thorough walkthrough with your contractor before any work begins. This will give you a chance to review the scope of work, clarify your expectations and identify potential issues that may not appear in the building plans.
Construction drawings don’t always capture every detail of a project. During a walkthrough, you and your contractor can review the site together and make sure everyone is aligned on where things will go, what materials are being used, and what access will be needed. This step often uncovers overlooked elements (utility connections, landscaping concerns, structural adjustments, etc.) that, if caught too late, could lead to costly change orders or project delays.
Always document everything that you and your contractor discussed during the walkthrough, and don’t hesitate to ask questions so you can avoid surprises later in the process. Also, don’t forget to do another walkthrough at the end of the project so you can verify everything was completed according to the original plan.
