3 Ways to Ensure a Long-Lasting Driveway

A new driveway is a big investment, so it’s worth taking the right steps to maximize its lifespan. While many homeowners focus all their attention on the finished surface, the long-term performance of your driveway depends on what happens before, during and after the installation. Here are three factors to consider:

1. Make sure the sub-base is properly prepared. If your driveway is being installed over soil, the soil should be removed and replaced with the right base material. Proper compaction is also critical because a strong foundation helps prevent costly problems like cracking and sinking.

2. Ensure the asphalt is installed correctly. Once the surface is laid, the asphalt needs to be compacted and applied at the correct temperature. If the material isn’t handled correctly during installation, it may not reach its expected lifespan, which could lead to repairs or replacement sooner than necessary.

3. Keep up with maintenance. After your driveway is installed, wait six to 12 months before applying the first sealer. This will allow the materials to cure while preserving the fines and rocks on the surface. Keep sealcoating your driveway with one coat every two years or two coats every four years.
