Video: Ensuring the Safety of Your Deck

with Nick Thompson of Thompson Construction, Inc.

How to ensure the safety of your deck. Decks can be very, a beautiful item. It's an addition to your house. It's an, sometimes an addition to like your living room, but they can also be dangerous if not properly built or properly maintained. So some items that you wanna look out for is if you're up off the ground and you have a railing, you wanna make sure that railing is properly supported. It hasn't, doesn't have any dry rot in it, or the fasteners haven't failed. So maybe once a year. It, it's really easy to do. Just give it a shake and if you feel it's loose or it, maybe there's a little bit of give to it, call a construction company. If it's sturdy, you're probably fine.

If the deck is a on newer side it's probably not something you need to do every year. Maybe every few years you could check it out. But if you have an older deck that's been around for 20 plus years, that's something you definitely want to keep an eye on. We come across a lot of failing decks. So if you look at the deck itself, a lot of old decks are made outta redwood. So if as you're walking across the deck and you feel a soft spot, or maybe there's a broken board, you can tell that, you know, if you put a lot of weight on it, you might fall through. That's a huge red flag. But sometimes too, the rock can be under the deck and the deck framing. And if you can get underneath the deck and take a look and try to visually spot that rot, then that would be the easiest thing to do.
