How to Spot Water Leaks Inside Your Home

Water leaks can cause serious damage if they go unnoticed, so it’s important to regularly inspect your home for signs of moisture problems. Here are some good places to start:

Check under and around sinks. Sinks in kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms and garages are common places for leaks to develop. Water can escape from several sources, including water hoses connected to faucets and appliances, angle stops (the small valves that control water flow at the wall), and drain lines beneath sinks. Look for water stains or dampness on the bottom of cabinets, and for pedestal or wall-mounted sinks, inspect the floor for discoloration or swelling in the flooring material. A simple trick is to place a paper towel under the pipes—if it gets damp after a few hours, you’ve found a leak.

Inspect showers and bathtubs. Over time, water can seep through gaps in the sealant around shower doors, walls or tiles. Look out for water stains or dampness on the bathroom floor outside the shower, mold or mildew growth on shower tiles or glass, and cracked or missing silicone caulking. If you see any of these issues, reseal the shower or replace the old caulk to prevent further water intrusion.

Watch for toilet leaks. Check for moisture around the toilet base, which might indicate a failed wax ring seal. Examine the angle stop or water supply line for drips down the wall or onto the floor. Remember, even a slow leak can waste significant water and lead to floor rot over time.
