Today we're gonna talk about the benefits of an asphalt shingle roof. One of the things you wanna make certain that is done is that you remove the entire existing roof. Sometimes you'll have two or three layers of roofing material from previous contractors that have done overlays.
Your deck is your substrate. That is the plywood or OSB that you want to build your new roof on. These are the areas where roofs can cause leaks. There's areas of other roofing failures where you'll start to see little pieces of fiber coming away from the granules that have come off of your roof.
So a contractor takes the roof all the way down to a brand-new substrate and builds the roof back up. Put down a titanium felt underlayment. Also put a membrane around all your penetrations. So you wanna protect what matters most, which is your house. So as we build up the roof with these components, we also know that the shingle will last a lot longer against the heat and against the conditions of hail and wind and rain if it's got all of the proper components underneath it.
The other thing that is really important on a roof is to make sure that your attic ventilation is appropriate. So we put in a ridge vent system so that the air and the heat can actually come out of the top of your roof, again, giving your shingle a lot longer time to last.
You wanna make sure that it's done by a certified contractor. The Master Elite certification program with GAF makes certain that everyone is trained on the warranties, on the sales process, and on the installation, and then you can get higher ratings by doing it properly.
