An asphalt shingle roof is only as reliable as the system underneath it. While shingles are the most visible part of the roof, proper installation involves several layers and components that work together to protect your home from weather conditions.
One of the most important steps is removing the existing roofing material before installing the new roof. Some homes may have two or even three layers of older roofing from previous overlays. Removing those layers allows your contractor to inspect the roof deck (the plywood or OSB substrate that supports the roofing system) and identify damaged areas that could contribute to future leaks.
Once the deck is properly prepared, the roof can be rebuilt with protective components such as synthetic underlayment and waterproof membranes around penetrations. These layers provide an additional barrier against moisture and help protect vulnerable areas around vents, pipes, and other openings.
