Jeremy Owens: Building a Legacy
By Caitlyn Stair, Diamond Certified Research Reporter
Jeremy Owens’ introduction to the home renovation industry started long before he officially joined his family’s business. As a child, he would accompany his father on sales calls and visit jobsites, where he gained an early understanding of the work. “I was only five or six years old, but I knew what was going on and what the business looked like,” he recalls.
The Owens family’s home renovation legacy dates back to 1956, when Jeremy’s grandfather, Bob, started installing siding and windows. Jeremy’s father, Kurt, joined him in 1975, and together they founded Owens Western Builders in 1978. Years later, after attending college, Jeremy found himself drawn back to the family business. In 2006, he officially stepped in and launched 3 Generations Improvements. “It was a natural fit,” he says. “My dad has always been on the sales side and I’ve always had more of a business and operations mindset, so I took on that role early.”
Today, Jeremy focuses on leading 3 Generations Improvements with both tradition and forward-thinking strategies. While he enjoys planning and managing daily operations, he acknowledges the need for balance. “I like to lead, manage and project out to see into the future,” he affirms. “Those are the parts I enjoy the most.”
While the tools and technology have changed dramatically over the decades, Jeremy still values the personal connections that defined earlier eras of the business. At the same time, he embraces the evolution of the industry, recognizing the growing role of digital tools, customer reviews and more informed homeowners. “There are a lot more ways for customers to find you and share their experiences,” he notes. “For us, that’s a good thing because we take pride in doing the job the right way.”
Originally from Spokane, Washington, Jeremy relocated to the Sacramento area in the late ’80s and currently lives in Folsom, where he appreciates having access to a wide range of outdoor activities. “I really enjoy the outdoors, so being close to places like the Sierra Nevada mountains and Folsom Lake is great,” he says. “It’s really easy to get into nature in Folsom because it’s right outside our back door.”
For Jeremy, one of the most meaningful aspects of his work is continuing what his family started while adapting it for a new generation. He’s already thinking about the future of 3 Generations Improvements—his youngest son, Andrew, has started joining him on sales calls, getting an early introduction similar to his own experience. While he doesn’t want to place pressure on the next generation, he hopes to create opportunities for them if they choose to follow the same path. “We’re trying to build something with a strong foundation,” he says. “If they want to be part of it, great…but it has to be their choice.”
The commitment to doing things correctly remains at the core of 3 Generations Improvements’ philosophy. Jeremy emphasizes integrity above all, approaching each project as if it were his own home. “If you do it right the first time, you don’t have to worry about cutting corners or going back,” he says. “You can sleep at night knowing you did your best.”
