HVAC technology and home construction standards have changed dramatically over the past decade, so if you need to replace your heating and cooling equipment, you shouldn’t assume the size of your existing system is still appropriate.
Two homes of the same size can have very different heating and cooling demands. For example, an older home may have minimal attic insulation, original uninsulated ductwork and inefficient windows. A newer or upgraded home might have R-38 attic insulation, radiant barriers, energy-efficient windows and R-8 insulated ductwork. Even if both homes are 1,200 square feet, the same HVAC system will perform very differently in each.
Before buying a new system, have an HVAC professional perform a Manual J load calculation. This calculation considers factors like insulation levels, ductwork, windows, air leakage and how much sunlight the home receives. Evaluating the entire house will allow the contractor to properly size your system for better comfort, efficiency and long-term performance.
