Your septic system’s leach field plays an important role in safely dispersing wastewater, but it can get damaged if solids are allowed to leave the tank and enter the perforated pipes underground. Once those pipes become clogged, the leach field may stop draining properly and eventually fail. There are two ways to prevent this:
1. Have your septic tank pumped regularly. Most homes should schedule pumping every three to five years, although the exact interval depends on your household size and water usage.
2. Install an effluent filter on the tank’s outlet. This filter will help catch smaller particles and residue before they can enter the leach lines, providing an additional layer of protection against clogging.
When having your septic tank pumped, make sure the company does a thorough job. The tank should be completely emptied rather than partially pumped, so consider checking it afterward to confirm the accumulated material has been removed.
