The more prepared you are before your movers arrive, the more efficiently your move will go, which can reduce your final cost if you’re paying by the hour. Here are three things to focus on:
1. Get rid of things you no longer want or need. Donate, sell or discard unwanted items before moving day so you aren’t paying to pack and transport things that you’ll eventually get rid of anyway.
2. Make your home easy for movers to navigate. Clear pathways, remove items from shelves, and empty loose belongings from desks and nightstands. Furniture sometimes needs to be tilted to get through a home, and loose items can spill out or add unnecessary weight. If possible, you should also disassemble furniture ahead of time, although your moving company may be able to handle this for you.
3. Make sure the moving truck has convenient access to your home. Having a clear place to park near the entrance reduces the distance that movers have to carry your belongings.
