3 Ways to Keep Your Construction Project on Track

Even a carefully planned construction project involves unknowns, which is why it’s important to communicate with your contractor throughout the process. Here are three tips to ensure the best possible outcome:

Stay reachable without hovering. Being available doesn’t mean standing over the crew all day—in fact, constant oversight can slow their progress. Instead, focus on being accessible through communication channels like text message, email, phone, WhatsApp or Zoom. If your contractor has a quick question or needs clarification about fixture placement, a timely response can prevent delays.

Schedule weekly jobsite meetings. These check-ins provide an opportunity to review progress, discuss upcoming phases and address new ideas before they lead to costly change orders. For example, if you decide you want additional lighting, a different TV location or another electrical outlet, it’s better to make that decision before drywall is installed or tile is set.

Clarify layout and design details early. During construction, your contractor may need direction on specific layout choices. With tile installation alone, there are multiple variables to consider. Should the pattern start from the left corner or the center? Do you prefer a straight layout or a staggered pattern? Vertical or horizontal orientation? These decisions directly impact both aesthetics and installation time, so explaining your preferences will ensure a smoother process.
