Successful construction projects start long before the first nail is driven. Taking time to plan ahead is the best way to ensure your project stays on schedule and remains within budget. The more decisions you finalize upfront, the fewer surprises you’ll encounter once work is underway. Here are two good places to start:
1. Finalize design choices early. Before construction begins, determine the exact materials you’ll be using so you can strategize accordingly. For example, if you plan to mount a TV, install towel bars or hang heavy accessories, proper framing support and wiring must be installed during the rough stage. Failing to plan for these items can mean cutting into finished walls later, which often requires removing tile, repairing drywall and repainting.
2. Coordinate appliances. If you select large appliances (refrigerator, oven, dishwasher) early in the process, your contractor can design cabinetry to fit properly and ensure the electrical outlets and plumbing systems are positioned correctly. When these decisions are delayed, it can lead to misaligned cabinets, relocated wiring or plumbing modifications that increase costs.
