Use this guide to help you select the best furniture that combines functionality, style and durability.

Choosing quality furniture for your home is an investment in comfort and style. High-quality pieces not only look great but also endure through years of use. Here’s a guide to help you select the best furniture that combines functionality, style and durability:

Assess the construction. The durability of furniture is largely dependent on its construction. Opt for furniture that feels solid and heavy. Solid wood frames are a sign of quality as they tend to last longer than lighter materials like particle board. For upholstered pieces, check that the frame is sturdy by lifting one corner or leg of the sofa off the floor; if the other leg doesn't quickly rise off the floor, the frame is too flexible and not durable.

Check the joinery. The method used to join pieces of wood indicates the quality of the furniture. Look for words like “dovetail,” “mortise and tenon” or “reinforced by blocking,” which suggest that the furniture was made with attention to longevity. Avoid pieces that are simply glued or nailed together.

Test the springs. If you’re buying upholstered furniture, the springs are another element of construction that can indicate quality. Sofas and chairs should have springs that are close together and firm. Test the springs by sitting on the furniture; they should be supportive and well secured to the frame.

Examine the finish. Whether you’re looking at wood, metal or any other material, the finish should be smooth and free of bubbles or blemishes. For wood furniture, the stain should be even without any dark spots. Also, check the paint finish for consistency and smoothness.

Consider the fabrics. Upholstery fabric should be appropriate for the piece’s intended use. For pieces that will see frequent use, choose a fabric that is durable like synthetic microfiber or
leather, which can withstand wear and tear. For less frequented areas, you can choose more delicate fabrics.

Look at the details. The details of a piece of furniture can tell you about its quality. Check that drawers and doors open smoothly, sit flush, and are square with the frame. In upholstered pieces, seams should be straight and patterns should align, especially at the edges.

Think about lifestyle. Your lifestyle should influence the type and quality of furniture you buy. For example, families with young children or pets should look for durable, easy-to-clean
furniture. Consider also how much use the furniture will get to determine if investing in a higher-quality piece makes sense.

Test the comfort. No matter how well a piece of furniture is made, it won’t be right for your home if it’s not comfortable. Sit on chairs, recline on sofas and lie on beds to make sure they
feel right. Remember, what feels comfortable for a few minutes in a store might feel different when you use it at home.

SANTA ROSA — When it comes to reupholstering a chair or sofa, one aspect that’s sometimes overlooked is the cushion. However, a cushion can have a significant impact on how a piece of furniture looks and functions, so it’s important to look beyond the fabric and regard what lies beneath. Few people realize that a cushion can make or break an upholstery project. Whether it doesn’t fit correctly or wasn’t properly installed, a cushion can make the entire job look bad. Additionally, a poorly installed cushion is often uncomfortable, which can defeat the purpose of having a piece of furniture in the first place. To avoid such issues, discuss your cushion options with an upholstery specialist and, Read more
