Who Remembers President Kennedy’s Consumer Bill of Rights?

Kennedy’s assassination. It’s a day etched deeply in the collective memory of our country. What some of you may not remember about JFK is he was a champion of consumer rights. During his administration, a “Consumer Bill of Rights” was formally introduced and remains a cornerstone of all modern consumer protections. In a 1962 speech, President Kennedy told Congress that consumers have four rights: the right to safety, the right to be informed, the right to choose and the right to be heard. This original bill of rights has been expanded through the United Nations to include the right to basic needs, redress, consumer education and a healthy environment. JFK had campaigned for president with a promise to protect consumers, and he followed through on that promise. President Kennedy’s support directly led to landmark consumer legislation such as the Truth in Lending Act, the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act, and the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act (rules against deceptive warranty practices), as well as the formation of the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
