What is a Christmas Smörgåsbord?

In keeping with my December tradition of sharing holiday recipes and traditions, this year I want to describe the kind of Christmas buffet that I grew up with given my Swedish heritage.

Before I could spell the word, I always looked forward to our holiday spread known as a “smörgasbord.” It’s a Swedish word that literally means “butter-goose table,” but it’s essentially a buffet of small dishes (breads, fishes, cold cuts, desserts) that you serve yourself. The idea is to eat and socialize around the table for several hours with friends and family.

I clearly remember trying new foods as a child, ranging from pickled herring and lox to liver pâté and, of course, Swedish meatballs with lingonberries. The Swedes might also serve smoked reindeer and eel along with warm spiced wine (glögg). Desserts include rice pudding and ginger snaps.

It might be fun to create your own California version of the Christmas smörgåsbord. There are plenty of ideas online of how to decorate your buffet table and what to serve. I would definitely have sourdough bread along with the Swedish limpa, local crab, mini sausages, red cabbage slaw, and plenty of California fruit like persimmons and pomegranates. Lastly, a nice touch would be to have sparkling water with a splash of lingonberry syrup.

Happy Holidays!

Use Diamond Certified Resource to find top rated companies.

Related Articles
Your Seasonal Guide to Winter-Related Services
Get Expert Advice From Owners of Top Rated Local Companies
Become a Diamond Certified Preferred Member (Always Free)
