What Are the New Rules for Tipping?

Since the pandemic, many people feel as though the tipping culture in the United States is out of control. And that’s actually true—more places ask for tips and they also ask for larger amounts. I was shocked the first time I saw an option to tip 25% on a mobile device brought by a server. Digital screens at takeout counters present tip options (although there’s minimal service provided), and sometimes I feel guilty choosing no tip when the employee is standing right there. A friend of mine complained that she was recently prompted to leave a tip by her mechanic! I’ve never seen that before.

So, when should you always tip? It’s recommended at full-service establishments because servers rely on those gratuities to make a livable wage. Tipping 18 to 20% on the food and beverages (but not the sales tax) is customary. It’s also advised to tip hairdressers, manicurists and taxis 10 to 20%. In hotels, leave the housekeepers a couple of dollars per day per person…and why not leave a handwritten thank-you note as well?

You can find plenty of guidelines online for tipping. Here are a few of them: $2 to $5 for valets and airport skycaps, $1 to $2 per drink for bartenders, and 15 to 20% for room service if the tip isn’t tacked onto your bill. One final reminder is to check the bill for automatic service charges, especially for groups of six or more. This is a common practice.

Use Diamond Certified Resource to find top rated companies.

Related Articles
Your Guide to Being a Savvy Consumer
Get Expert Advice From Owners of Top Rated Local Companies
Become a Diamond Certified Preferred Member (Always Free) Find Top Rated Companies in the San Francisco Bay Area
