Understanding and Complying With Safety Rules When Flying

The seatbelt sign will be on and passengers still get up to use the restroom or stretch. Many don’t bother to carefully stow their bags under the seat in front of them. And how many of us truly listen to the safety briefing? On a recent flight to Hawaii, my husband and I sat in the emergency exit row, and we both spent extra time examining the safety instructions for evacuating the aircraft. That exercise reminded me why we have so many rules and guidelines for what to do on planes. For example, why should you put on your own oxygen mask first before helping others? You only have a few seconds to get extra oxygen above 10,000 feet before you might lose consciousness. Why do seatbacks and tray tables have to be put back in position? You don’t want them interfering with an escape in case of an emergency. If you have to evacuate, why should you leave your carry-ons behind? Every second counts in these situations and a fast exit can save lives. Recent news stories about turbulence on airplanes and serious injuries occurring should be enough to get fliers to respect the “fasten seatbelt” sign and keep their seatbelts on whenever they’re seated. In one incident, flight attendants hit their heads on the ceiling and broke their ankles. Just remember, all these rules are for your safety and everyone else’s.
