Time to Spend Your Unused Gift Cards

And just think…you could be receiving even more of them over the holidays! It’s time to get organized, make a plan and enjoy them.  According to Bankrate, more than 40% of us are holding cards averaging almost $250 in value. Millennials carry the highest balance of unused cards of all the demographic groups, and they’re more likely to lose them. In fact, 34% of people lose the cash value because the cards go missing or expire, or the merchant goes out of business. Why are we so lazy about gift cards? Bankrate’s study found that people don’t use them if the store is inconvenient or it’s a place they don’t like. Regifting is a good solution for that. Another good suggestion is that when giving, make an extra effort to find the right gift card for the right person—something you know they will use and enjoy. Right now, my homework is to find all the cards I’m sitting on (restaurants, a spa, a bookstore and coffee). Then, I’ll put them in a special section of my wallet and make a point of using them within the next 60 days. That’s my plan.
