The Importance of Being an Informed Auto Parts Consumer

Many vehicle owners choose auto parts and fluids based on price alone, but this is seldom a good strategy. There are different levels of quality for any individual product, so if you choose the cheapest one, it can lead to problems when it comes to following the recommendations of your vehicle’s manufacturer.

A good example of this is engine oil. While many vehicle manufacturers recommend an oil change interval of 7,000 miles, this assumes that high-quality engine oil (like a synthetic product) is being used. If you purchase cheap, low-grade oil that’s only good for 5,000 miles, driving 7,000 miles before having your oil changed can result in damage to your engine and related components.

Like engine oil, the same rule applies to any part your car needs, whether a fan belt or brake pads. For each product, there are generally two or three levels of quality, which is typically reflected in the price difference between them. For this reason, it’s important to make an informed decision when purchasing auto parts and fluids. A good resource is a trustworthy service technician who can explain your different product options and help you make the right choice for your vehicle’s needs.
