Roy Nickolai: A Valet State of Mind

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SAN CARLOS — Like many young people, Roy Nickolai spent his high school years working a typical teenage job as a valet parking attendant. However, even when he left to pursue a more “grown-up” occupation, in his heart, he never left the parking lot. “Growing up in San Francisco, some of my friends had older brothers who valeted at House of Prime Rib, and as we came of driving age, we were able to work our way into the rotation,” he remembers. “After high school, I continued to valet through college to pay my tuition.”

Following college graduation, Roy started working in real estate, but it didn’t give him the same level of fulfillment that his previous job had. “Doing loans and second mortgages was great, but I couldn’t stop thinking about how much I enjoyed valet,” he explains. “Over time, I got the idea to start my own business. I knew that if I worked as hard as I did at my current job, I would do well. Eventually, I took the leap and started my own valet company, which turned out to be very successful.”

Today, as owner of All About Parking, Roy says his favorite part of his job is the fact that it intersects a broad range of industries and personalities. “Due to the variety of people and businesses that use our service, we get to meet and interact with individuals from all different walks of life, which keeps things interesting. Plus, it allows us to keep a finger on the pulse of the latest trends, as well as the new business and technological developments that are coming up in the Bay Area.”

A San Francisco native, Roy resides today in San Mateo with his wife, Carole, where he appreciates the area’s intrinsic variety. “I think the Bay Area is unique in its level of diversity. Living here, we have access to a really well-rounded lifestyle, including all types of cuisine and entertainment.”

Outside of work, Roy spends his time engaged in a variety of active pastimes, including sports, food and music. “I’ve always loved sports—I played several sports in high school, but these days it’s mostly golf and tennis,” he says. “I’m also a foodie and I enjoy entertainment, especially going to concerts.” Additionally, Roy likes spending time with his family, including his son, Nate, who is currently an English major at UCLA. “We have a huge family, all local, so we do a lot of family gatherings, which is really nice.”

In his life and career, Roy espouses the importance of investing in the youth. “All my adult life, I’ve been passionate about empowering young people, whether through coaching and volunteering or as an employer,” he explains. “I really try to invest in my employees’ personal and professional development by teaching them about respect, responsibility, and leadership. That way, whatever direction they choose to go later, I know they’ll walk away from here with some valuable life skills and character development.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Roy says he’d take a trip. “I don’t really see myself retiring because I truly love what I do and have a vision of growing it to new levels. However, if did retire, I would certainly travel. I’d probably start by taking my wife and son on a trip somewhere we all want to go.”

  • How To Work With
Steps to Hiring Santa Clara County Valet Parking Services for Your Event or Venue

Deciding on a local valet company is a big step. The valet parking services you choose may be the first impression your guests get of your event, so you want to choose professional and reliable service.

But you've done your due diligence and carefully interviewed and researched companies that serve Gilroy, Cupertino, Campbell, Palo Alto, Milpitas and your area. Now is the time to do a few last-minute checks and then move forward by reserving your dates and signing a contract with the valet parking company you choose.

Make Some Visits or Calls to Reaffirm Your Decision on the Best Valets for You
It's hard to know where promises end and action begins. So while making phone calls, meeting valet company owners in person, and talking to their former clients can give you a good idea of what to expect, some individuals prefer to see in action the companies they're considering.

One way to get a first-hand look at Santa Clara County valet services is to drop by to see or even experience their methods and work ethic.

If the company is providing car valet services at a location near you, make plans to attend or simply pass by to view their service in action. You may need to contact the venue or hosts if it's a private event, but most should be willing to give you access. This may take the form of walking up and watching the valets work, or even pulling up your vehicle for them to park.

While this won't tell you everything you need to know about the valet parking companies in question, it can give you a first-hand experience with their services and a good indication of what you can expect at your own event.

Signing a Contract with Local Valet Services
Once you have finalized your decision, it's time to sign a contract.

Contracts are legally-binding agreements, so make sure the one you receive is clearly worded, reflects your needs and expectations and those of the Santa Clara County valet service you're hiring. Never sign a blank or incomplete estimate or contract, nor one that's incorrect or does not reflect your understanding of the agreement. You will be held liable for all promises and agreements in any contract or estimate you sign.

Be sure you ask any questions and get clarification on items before signing the contract. Feel free to write in verbally agreed-upon terms you've made with the valet parking company or the representative you dealt with. This may include terms and expectations, instructions and expected start and end times. You may also specify the number of valets on duty, and other requests.

Simplify the Valet Services for the Best Outcome
Good valet services in Santa Clara County, including those in Milpitas, Palo Alto, Cupertino, San Jose, Sunnyvale, Gilroy and beyond, shouldn't require much from you. However, there are a few things you can do to make the valet services more of a success. This may lead to happier guests and a better working relationship between you and the Santa Clara County valet parking company you hired.

    • Act as a liaison between your valet parking service and the facility or venue. Find out which is responsible for what services, and learn if there's anything that needs to be coordinated in terns of valet parking. You may put the two parties in touch early in the planning process, but stay in the loop to be sure both the facility and car valet company are upholding their end of the agreement and communicating with the other.
    • Be honest about your expectations and plans. Know and communicate all event details that can impact your valet parking service.
    • Be proactive about finding parking availability, if needed, and work with the valets, venue, city, or other local businesses to secure the parking space required.
    • Uphold your end of the bargain. Provide what you promise, do what you say, and take the actions your valet parking companies is expecting of you. If you need them to do everything, make that clear from the start and don't promise more than you can give.

Some valet company uniforms are black and white formal dress clothes or tuxedos, polo shirts with company logos, while others wear specially-colored vests or cummerbunds, or a company jacket or vest with a logo. Many will also offer their clients a choice of uniform style to match the event, which may include level of formality and even color scheme.

Q: How do local valet parking companies charge for their services?
A: Most valet parking companies charge a set hourly fee per valet attendant provided. Others will offer a package deal based on the size of your gathering and expected number of vehicles parked. Some may even charge a fee based on the number of vehicles they are asked to valet during the event. Check with your local valet parking companies about their rates and contract fees.

Q: Will the valets we hire come with their own professional-looking valet equipment?
A: Professional valet companies will provide attractive, functional equipment that make them and your event look reputable and rich. This may include valet lock boxes for guest keys, valet parking tickets and tags for returning keys, signs, cones, velvet ropes, check-in stations, flashlights, communication devices and more. Some even provide golf carts or other transportation for the valets that speeds up the return of client cars. Talk with your local valet parking service about what they provide and what items, if any, you or the venue will need to provide.

Q: What if our event exceeds the expected time stated in the contract we signed with the valet parking company?
A: Each valet parking company has its own rules and regulations and ways of handling these types of situations. Events that run over the expected time are not uncommon, so the valet parking service you choose should have an easy answer to this question. Most will charge specific overage rates in 15 or 30 minute increments per valet parking attendant hired. These fees can add up, however, so be sure to ask your valet parking company about their overage policies and rates. It may be wise to overestimate the length of your event to avoid hefty overtime fees.

Q: Will valet parking companies provide umbrella and wheelchair service?
A: That's just a part of the job for most good valet parking services. Most will come equipped with umbrellas for inclement weather, and they should be trained to help guests in wheelchairs get into and out of their vehicles and wheelchairs. Some may even provide wheelchairs for guests who do not have their own. If you anticipate needing umbrella services or expect guests who use wheelchairs, ask your valet parking company if they will be handling these needs and how they cater to each set of circumstances.

Q: Will the valets we hire expect our guests to tip them?
A: That depends on the company and the contract you've signed with them. Some valet companies charge clients lower fees with the expectations that individuals who take advantage of the valet parking will tip their attendants. Other companies honor client wishes for not accepting tips, but may require a higher contract fee to pay their attendants extra to make up for lost tips. Talk with your valet parking company about their usual service fees and whether they accept or expect tips. If you want your guests to not have to tip their valets, it is appropriate to put up no-tipping signs and make it known that valets are paid accordingly and that gratuities are added to the venue or client fees.

Q: How many valet attendants should I plan for?
A: Your valet parking company will help you decide this number. You don't want to hire too many attendants and pay for them to stand around, but you don't want your guests to have to wait long for service, either. Some valet parking services will send additional valets at the start of an event and toward the end of the event to deal with heavy drop off and pick up times, while others give you a certain number of attendants that stay at the event during the entire contract time. The companies will take into account the type of event, guest count, layout of the facility, number and location of parking spaces and more in order to determine the right number of valet parking attendants for your needs.

Q: How are valet parking attendants screened?
A: Again, each valet parking company does things differently. However, the most reputable valet parking services in the area hire personable, professional valet attendants that they carefully screen. This may include a DMV record check, state license check, criminal background check, drug screening, reference check, extensive training, and more. Talk with your valet parking service to find out exactly how their attendants are screened, trained and hired.

Q: Why do I need to make sure my valet parking company is insured?
A: Valets drive client and guest vehicles, and many of these cars are new and expensive. Your valet parking service should have liability and workers' compensation insurance that covers them, guest vehicles, host or venue property, and their employees and valet attendants. This insurance will cover any damages caused by the attendants to vehicles or by vehicles. However, it won't cover car problems that were not the fault of the attendant, such as preexisting mechanical issues or issues that happen to occur during the event.
