Ilan Sigura: An Integral Career

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SANTA CLARA — By the time he reached early adulthood, Ilan Sigura had already established deep roots in the construction industry. Even when he tried his hand at a new profession, it wasn’t long before he returned to the field that had become an integral part of his identity. “My father was a contractor, and he began teaching me the trade when I was just a boy,” he explains. “Later, as a college student, I decided to study computer science. After I graduated, I spent a couple of months engineering software for a tech company, but I didn’t like it at all. I felt insignificant working at a large company and my work had no direct impact on the lives of others. This was a stark contrast from construction, where I got to interact with people and see the results of my work firsthand. Ultimately, I decided to go back to doing what I knew best.”

Today, as owner of Sigura Construction, Inc., Ilan says his favorite part of his job is the pride he takes in his company’s reputation. “Between my production team, my estimators and my guys in the field, I run a fairly large operation. As we continue to receive high customer satisfaction ratings, it’s an indication that we’re doing very well, which I find very satisfying.”

Originally from Israel, Ilan came to the United States in 1990 to attend college in New Jersey. “My plan was to return home and run my father’s business after graduating, but as it turned out, I fell in love with this country and never went back.” After migrating to the Bay Area for what was to be a brief stint in the tech field, Ilan settled in Sunnyvale, where he now lives with his wife, Rinat, and their five children. When asked his favorite part about living in the Bay Area, he expresses his appreciation of the diverse local landscape. “I like being outdoors, and there are lots of opportunities for that here. With so much to explore and so much variety, it never gets boring.”

Outside of work, Ilan spends the bulk of his time with his family. “My wife and I believe in giving our kids skills so they can grow up to be confident and independent,” he says. “We like taking them camping and sightseeing, as well as doing activities like riding quads and jet skiing.” Additionally, Ilan extends his passion for construction to his home environment. “I do a lot of home improvement projects, which keeps me working with my hands and helps me stay in touch with my trade.”

In his life and career, Ilan says he never forgets to consider the impact of his work on future generations. “As a professional, I believe in doing things honestly and with integrity—not only because what goes around comes around, but because we need to leave a good place for our children to inherit. That’s why my team and I make an effort to implement eco-friendly measures in our work whenever possible. With everything we do, we want to make sure we’re doing right by the planet and the people who inhabit it.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Ilan says it’s a doubtful scenario. “I don’t think I’ll ever retire—I’ll always want to work. But if I did retire, I’d spend more time with my wife and kids. After all, they’re the most important things to me.”

What To Ask In Person
Interviewing Santa Clara County Water and Fire Repair Contractors in Person

You should have a good idea of what services are available and which Santa Clara County water repair and fire restoration construction companies are most responsive to your needs once you’re done interviewing some company representatives over the phone.

Now, you’ll want to invite a few (usually three to five) of the best to visit your home. This will give them a chance to see the damage and how much clean up has already been done, and allow them to answer a few questions in person as well as give you an itemized bid for the repair services.

Again, you’ll want to have a written list of questions to ask each water & fire renovation contractor. Record their answers so that you can recall which contractor gave the answers that most impressed you.

The following questions will get you started:

  • What process do you use to ensure that your estimates for fire repair / water damage repair are accurate?
  • Can you/how do you look beyond surface damage to determine if the structure of my home is safe?
  • What happens if the fire or water damage is more extensive than the original estimate reflects?
  • Will this fire/water damage repair construction require a building permit? Who will be responsible to get those permits?(Beware of contractors who ask you to take out needed permits yourself. This may be a sign they’re not licensed contractors.)
  • What is the process like for restoring my home to its pre-fire/pre-flood condition?
  • Can I remain in my home during the repairs?
  • Do you have recent customer references I can call? (Ask specifically for the names of recent customers who live near you or who had work done that is similar in scope and type to the work you need to have done.)
  • Do you have any recent projects in my area of Santa Clara County where I can see the fire and water damage repair construction from the street? Are there any completed homes I can visit?

The next step in hiring a fire and water damage repair contractor in Santa Clara County, including those that operate in and around Gilroy, Cupertino, Campbell, Palo Alto, Milpitas and your area, is to request a detailed estimate and sign a contract for services needed.

The contract should include the price, start and end dates and any special requests you’ve agreed upon with your local home renovation contractor. You’ll also want to confirm any warranties or guarantees at this time and make sure they’re in writing in the contract.

Simple Steps You Can Take to Speed Along the Fire and Water Damage Repairs
The cost and time frame of home repairs after a fire or flood will vary depending on the severity of the damage and the area of your home that was impacted. However, there are a few actions you can take to help the work go faster and more smoothly.

Hire contractors in Santa Clara County that specialize in water and fire damage repairs. There are many contracting and building firms in Santa Clara County, and most probably could repair the damage caused by fire and flood. However, you’re more likely to get a good outcome and quality home repairs if you hire a local contractor who specializes in repairing and renovating homes and businesses after a flood, fire or water damage event. These contractors will have the right tools and expertise to do the job correctly, including the special removal and rebuilding aspects that are crucial to fire and water damage repairs.

Remove fire and water damaged items and materials. Some fire and water damage repair contractors in Santa Clara County will provide immediate clean up services after a disaster. These companies will remove burned or wet flooring, drywall, furniture and other items. However, you may hire a water and fire restoration contractor who only rebuilds after disasters. In this case, you’ll need to have a professional remove the damaged materials in your home or business.

Store unnecessary items. You’ll want to remove items from rooms and areas that will be under construction or are in need of repairs. This will allow your Santa Clara County water and fire repair contractors to have full access to the damaged rooms and areas, and it will avoid further damage to your furniture and belongings.

Provide storage space if needed. Some companies will want to store new flooring, drywall, boards and other construction materials on-site during the water and fire damage repairs. They may ask you for space in which to store these materials and building equipment.

Supply clearance and parking space for work trucks. Large construction vehicles may require extra parking space. Ask your water and fire repair contractor how many work vehicles will need parking space, and whether trailers or other large vehicles will be on site daily. It may also be wise to walk through your property with your contractor before the fire and water damage repairs begin and have them advise you of any clearance issues, tree limbs, shrubs or plantings, lawn decorations or potential hazards that you can move or minimize before the work begins.

Prepare your home for repairs. Fire and water damage construction is often a dusty job. Many contractors will put up tape and plastic barriers to prevent construction dust and debris from entering areas of your home that haven’t been damaged, but you may be able to save time and money by preparing your home yourself. Talk with your home damage repair contractor about steps you can take before the repair work begins. Consider temporarily storing antiques, heirlooms and expensive décor and furniture items, especially those that are in high-traffic areas. You should also be aware that construction vibrations can cause artwork and decorative items to shift on or fall from shelves and walls.

Keep children and pets away from danger. Your Santa Clara County fire and water damage repair contractors shouldn’t be expected to watch out for kids and pets. So for their safety, keep pets and children out of the construction area and away from the contractors’ equipment and vehicles. It’s wise to keep everyone away from the construction area even when the work is on hiatus because tools, construction materials and exposed wires may pose a safety hazard.
