The most common problem with heating and air conditioning systems is people taking them for granted. If a flashlight or a toaster breaks, you replace it. But it never occurs to many people that the same holds true for the most expensive equipment in your home: your heating and air conditioning systems.

“Those items are only going to be efficient for so long,” says Owner Kenneth Morando, owner of Innovative Mechanic, Inc.

If you have an older furnace or air conditioning system, that’s more true than ever. The last decade has seen a surge in environmental awareness among consumers. The heating and air conditioning industry has followed suit, creating new products built on Green technologies that may barely have existed even a few years ago.

“Something made ten years ago is going to be far less efficient than something you buy today,” says Mr. Morando. Therefore, it might make good economic sense to replace an older unit with a newer, high-efficiency one. It will almost certainly make good environmental sense.

When you choose someone to undertake that replacement or preventative maintenance, Morando recommends choosing a company with longevity. Insist they be licensed and insured. And don’t hesitate to ask about their warranty in very specific terms. If your new furnace stops working after a few weeks, they’ll almost certainly agree to repair it at no cost. But what about a few years?

If you question a company’s credibility, look for outside sources of validation: professional associations, watchdog groups, the Better Business Bureau. It’s always a good idea to get a reference, too. In this industry, a reputation is often a company’s most valuable asset. Choose a company with great word of mouth recommendations.

Al Morando: Brotherly Ambition

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO — When asked how he became involved in the HVAC industry, Al Morando cites the influence of an older sibling. “My brother, Ken, started Innovative Mechanical in 1984,” he says. “About a decade later, I was taking a lot of marketing and communications classes in college, and Ken was looking to start a new marketing program with his business that would target the residential demographic. Because of my interest in marketing, he brought me on to help run the program, and I’ve been here ever since.”

Today, as vice president of Innovative Mechanical, Al says his favorite part of his job is interacting with customers. “I like the fact that I get to meet new people every day. I also enjoy the process of finding out what a customer’s needs are and directing them toward solutions that will satisfy those needs.”

A longtime resident of Millbrae (where he lives with his wife, Eleonora, and son, Giovanni), Al appreciates living and working close to home. “I come from a pretty big family, and most of them are here in the Bay Area,” he says. “We get together fairly often for holidays and birthdays. On the 4th of July, we have a barbeque with about 50 people in attendance, so that’s always fun.” When he’s not spending time with family, Al enjoys activities like playing golf and attending local professional sporting events.

In his life and career, Al espouses the importance of treating others with respect. “If a professional comes into my home, I would hope they’d treat me respectfully and look out for my best interests,” he says. “At Innovative Mechanical, that’s exactly the approach we take to serving our customers.”

When asked what his future retirement might look like, Al says he’d continue to stay connected with the family business. “Even after I retire, I’ll probably still come in and help out every once in a while, just to keep myself busy. Of course, I’ll also relax a little more and play a lot more golf.”

  • Differentiating Furnace Filter Efficiencies

    SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO — Many consumers assume all furnace filters are basically the same, but there’s actually a wide variety of grades and styles to choose from. One of the major ways in which filters differ is in regard to efficiency—an attribute that can substantially affect indoor air quality.

    The higher a filter’s efficiency, the more airborne particles and contaminants it’s able to filter out of a home’s airstream. For example, while a standard $5 filter is only 7 to 10 percent efficient at filtering out particles, a $20 pleated filter will typically perform at 30 to 35 percent efficiency. For those with severe allergies or respiratory problems, a high-efficiency filter is a great choice—it catches 94 to 99 percent of airborne particles, including contaminants like bacteria, microbial spores and pollen. While high-efficiency filters can range in price from $125 to $150 apiece, they only need to be changed once a year, whereas the cheapest filters need to be changed every one to two months.

    Before choosing a filter for your home, it’s a good idea to consult a licensed HVAC professional about the best option for your particular furnace system. In some cases, high-efficiency filters can cause performance problems with incompatible furnace models, so make sure you get some expert advice prior to making your selection.

    SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO — Host, Sarah Rutan:  When it comes to improving the energy efficiency in your home, one importance aspect is furnace filter efficiency. Today we’re in South San Francisco with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Albert Morando of Innovative Mechanical to learn more.

    Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Al Morando: Hi. I wanted to talk to you today about different types of filters and different efficiencies and seeing what might fit your needs best.

    The first filter I have here on the left is a standard filter. These are about 7% to 10% efficient at catching the dirt and dust particles. Basically, you can purchase them at the hardware store for somewhere between $2 to $5 apiece. This is just a standard-type filter you need to change it once a month when you’re using your heating and air-conditioning system.

    This filter is roughly 30% to 35% efficient at catching the dirt and dust particles. This filter at the hardware store can range somewhere between $15 and $25 apiece. A lot better filter than this one, as you can see. It’s a pleated filter, more efficient, better to help catch the dirt and dust particles that may be coming through your heating and air-conditioning system.

    And then the last filter I’ll show is a healthy climate filter. This is a high-grade filtration system that’s 94% efficient at catching the dirt and dust particles. This actually even has a carbon coating on it so it helps remove odors as well. This is something we’d recommend for somebody who has any kind of allergies or asthma or any type of respiratory problems; a lot better filter. Benefit with this is you only have to change it once a year, so there’s a lot less maintenance on it. The filter cartridges run between $125 and $150 apiece.

    The other benefit with filtration system, too, or any type of filter, you can turn your furnace fan on so it can just run continuously or regularly to filter out the air in your home. You usually get about three to four air changes in an hour when you’re running your furnace fan, so any time you’re running your heating, your cooling, or just the fan only switch, you’re filtering out the air which is going to improve your indoor air quality in your home.
