Right now, there are about 50 different types of food labels in the United States, including “Use by,” “Expires by” and “Please Enjoy by.” Some phrases are designed to help stores manage their inventory while others are to assure consumers that what they’re eating is safe. Because of the labeling confusion, Californians throw away more than 2 billion meals of unspoiled food, according to CalRecycle. That’s wasteful and takes up space in our landfills.

Starting this summer, there will only be two kinds of labels on California food products:

“Best if Used by” or “Best if Used or Frozen by” will be used to indicate the peak freshness (or quality) of a food item.

“Use by” or “Use by or Freeze by” will be used to indicate when a food item is no longer safe to eat.

Coded “sell by” dates are allowed to be used by retailers under the new law.
