The “pink tax” isn’t a government tax—it refers to gender-based pricing that results in women paying higher prices for identical products and services. California outlawed this practice in 2023, but it wouldn’t surprise me if you still come across cases of price discrimination.

The law was passed after numerous studies and investigative reports documented price discrepancies and showed that the pink tax cost women in California $47 billion. You may remember a time when dry cleaners were charging women higher prices than men to launder and iron cotton shirts. Women’s razors and deodorants were priced higher because they were in pink packaging, yet they had identical ingredients. The same goes for children’s toys and bicycles—identical products, but the pink one costs more than the blue one. Some insurance companies have been charging women higher prices for car insurance even though they have perfect driving records. Women can pay as much as 50% more for a basic haircut than men pay. These are just a few examples of discriminatory pricing.

California’s Attorney General is charged with enforcing this law. Stores can face fines ranging from $10,000 to $100,000 per violation.

Use Diamond Certified Resource to find top rated companies.

Related Articles
Your Guide to Being a Savvy Consumer
Get Expert Advice From Owners of Top Rated Local Companies
Become a Diamond Certified Preferred Member (Always Free)
