It’s your auto repair shop’s responsibility to carry out thorough and complete repairs on your car, truck or minivan, but you also play a part in the success of your vehicle’s repair. After all, your behavior sets the tone from your end and creates an atmosphere conducive to a good relationship. Because of this, your repairs may very well go smoother and problems may be more easily resolved. Here are a few simple steps you can take to be a good customer:

  • Be clear and upfront. Let the auto repair shop know what the problem is, what outcome you’re expecting and specific ways they can satisfy your expectations.
  • Before you leave your vehicle at a repair shop, restate your expectations and goals, and reiterate to the technicians your understanding of the agreement. Most problems with auto repair shops occur because of a breakdown in communication. By being clear about your expectations, you can avoid most conflicts.
  • Ask your service writer if they will call you with updates or if you should call to check on the progress of your vehicle repairs.
  • Be sure your service writer has a phone number where they can reach you at all times while your vehicle is in for repairs. Your repairs will move along more smoothly if they can reach you with necessary updates or for authorizations for further repairs.
  • When your shop contacts you, return calls promptly to keep the repairs on schedule.
  • Pay for the car repairs promptly.
