Replace your filter regularly (at least every three months). This simple measure is essential for sustaining a high quality of indoor air.

2. Keep an eye on your air ducts. Monitor dirt and dust buildup in your air ducts and have them professionally cleaned as needed. On average, ducts should be cleaned every two to five years. If you see pieces of insulation coming out of your vents, it may indicate the presence of rodents. In addition to likely ductwork damage, this poses a risk of compromised air quality, so have the situation assessed by a professional.

3. Install an air purifier. Adding an air purifier to your HVAC system can further improve the quality of your indoor air. However, prior to installation, it’s important to address air intrusion issues like leaky windows and doors, as excessive air intrusion can overburden an air purifier’s workload.

4. Have your furnace and air conditioner serviced regularly. When HVAC system components are neglected, it can lead to performance problems and even hazardous conditions. For example, with cooling systems, drains can get backed up and mold issues can arise. With heating systems, small carbon monoxide leaks can develop in the absence of ongoing maintenance.
