Get your system right. A stereo system consists of several interconnected components, including a turntable, receiver and loudspeakers. If one of these components is deficient, it can cause your whole system to underperform.

2. Learn to hold records properly. To avoid sullying or scratching your vinyl, never hold a record by the edge or playing surface. The correct way to hold a record is as a waiter carries a tray, with your thumb and two fingers on the underside of the center label (use the edge of your opposite thumb to help with balance).

3. Clean your records. No matter how carefully you treat your records, they still tend to accumulate dust over time, which increases ticks, pops and other unwanted noise during playback. In lieu of liquid cleaning agents, lightly clean the surfaces of your records with a carbon fiber brush. If you have a sizeable LP collection, consider purchasing a record cleaning machine.

4. Clean your stylus. Just as a record gets dirty over time, your record player’s stylus (also known as the needle) also accumulates dust and grime, which can diminish sound quality. Use an appropriate brush to clean the needle, and move from the back of the cartridge to the front, never side-to-side. Be sure to exercise care, as over-vigorous cleaning can damage the needle or cause it to break off.

5. Have your record player professionally serviced. Since a record player’s many working components need to be periodically calibrated or replaced, it’s a good idea to take yours to a hi-fi professional on a regular basis.

Use Diamond Certified Resource to find top rated companies.

Related Articles
The Homeowner's Guide to Home Video, Audio & Automation
Get Expert Advice From Owners of Top Rated Local Companies
Become a Diamond Certified Preferred Member (Always Free)
