Three Factors That Determine Fence Longevity

Three Factors That Determine Fence Longevity

When it comes to determining the expected lifespan of a wood fence, there are three decisive factors:

1. Quality of materials

Quality materials are the foundation of a quality fence. Most fence builders prefer construction heart (also known as con heart) grade redwood because of its resistance to termites, rot and discoloration. Other quality fence building materials include pressure-treated posts and hot-dip galvanized nails.

2. Quality of workmanship

Even if a fence is built with the best materials, subpar workmanship can undercut its long-term integrity. Make sure your fence contractor takes proactive measures such as maximizing the depth of fence posts, properly crowning post concrete and framing by hand rather than with a nail gun.

3. Preventative maintenance

Proactive measures like keeping fence posts out of contact with soil, adjusting the trajectory of irrigation sprinklers and applying a stain every two to three years can substantially prolong the lifespan of your fence.
