Miguel Espinoza: Every Step Matters

Miguel Espinoza didn’t enter the painting industry with a grand plan, but over time, he was able to build a career shaped by discipline, adaptability and a drive to improve with every opportunity. “I was basically at the bottom when I started in 2013—laying down drop cloths, picking up trash and doing whatever needed to be done,” he recalls. “I just stayed humble and kept learning. Even if it was something small, I treated it seriously because I knew I had to understand the process from the ground up.”

During his second year on the job, Miguel transitioned to hands-on painting work and learned how to cut clean lines and apply finishes. That progression soon expanded into cabinetry work, which gave him a broader understanding of finish craftsmanship. “That’s when I started to see the difference between just doing a job and doing it right,” he says. “Painting is all about preparation, detail and timing. Once you understand that, you start to care about every step.”

In 2016, Miguel’s role shifted to a coordination position. As the only bilingual employee at his company, he became a key bridge between crews and management. “My boss started relying on me to translate instructions to the painters and keep things organized,” he explains. “At first I didn’t think of it as leadership, but I definitely became the link between everyone.”

By 2018, Miguel had become a project manager overseeing multiple crews and coordinating daily operations across several jobs. When work slowed down four years later, he made a strategic shift and joined another company where he could build sales experience while continuing to prepare for his ultimate goal: launching his own business. In 2024, he took that step and founded Miguel’s Professional Painting.

Today, Miguel says his favorite part of his job is the ability to control every aspect of his work, from the first contact with a client to the finishing touches of their project. “I have a lot of management experience, so I’m able to take control of a job and make sure everyone is happy with how things are going. Being organized and polite goes a long way.”

Miguel lives in Antioch with his wife and their three children, where he enjoys the proximity to both nature and modern conveniences. Family is his biggest priority in his free time, but he also stays busy with hobbies like fishing, archery and playing guitar.

When it comes to how he lives his life and runs his business, Miguel believes true growth comes from taking an honest look at your situation. “Jim Morrison said, ‘Expose yourself to your deepest fear; after that, fear has no power, and the fear of freedom shrinks and vanishes. You’re free,’ he offers. “That’s how I try to approach each day.”
