Josh Henrich: Thoughtful Effort

For Josh Henrich, HVAC has been a lifelong education. After growing up in the industry and gaining experience in nearly every aspect of the trade, he now uses that knowledge to solve problems, educate customers and encourage a high standard of work from his team.

Josh’s introduction to the HVAC industry began in Chicago with his family’s company, Unique Indoor Comfort, where he worked as a teenager. “I was pretty much born into this business,” he says. “I got my EPA certification in 1993 when I was only 16 years old.”

Although HVAC was part of Josh’s life from an early age, his career didn’t follow a completely straight path. He left the industry to attend college and later worked for a mutual fund company in Boston. Eventually, he returned to Chicago and found himself back in the family business, where he gained experience in accounting, finance, service and installation.

After his mother retired, Josh and his sister decided to sell Unique Indoor Comfort but remained involved as it continued to grow under new ownership. He says that experience gave him a broader perspective on both the technical and business sides of the HVAC industry.

In January 2025, a new opportunity brought Josh across the country to Northern California, where he joined Moore Mechanical Heating & Air Conditioning as general manager. Today, he says one of his favorite parts of his job is using his experience to find solutions for homeowners. “I love solving people’s problems and making their homes healthier and more comfortable.”

Since relocating to the East Bay, Josh and his wife, Allison, have embraced California’s outdoor lifestyle—they and their five children can often be found visiting beaches, exploring tide pools, and hiking. “We wanted a more active lifestyle for our family, and that’s definitely what we got,” he says. “We go on a different adventure every weekend.”

Josh also has a longtime passion for sailing. He grew up with the sport and competed at the University of Rhode Island before being recruited to the University of Hawai’i, and he continues to sail competitively when time allows.

In both his life and career, Josh puts thoughtful effort into everything he does. “My dad used to tell me, ‘A good carpenter never blames his tools,’ and I pass that mentality to my employees and kids,” he offers. “I believe quality isn’t an accident—it’s the result of intelligent effort.”

Q: What’s the first thing you’d do if you could retire tomorrow?
A: I would clean out the garage because we have too much stuff! Other than that, I’d love to teach sailing.

Q: What are your favorite TV shows?
A: “1883” and “1923.” I think Taylor Sheridan is an amazing writer.

Q: What’s your favorite band?
A: O.A.R. My wife and I recently saw them at the Masonic in San Francisco and they were great.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to do on a rainy day?
A: Read with my kids. My youngest, Ellowinn, loves animals, so we spend a lot of time reading animal books.
