Don’t Ignore Excessive Dust in Your Home

If you’re constantly wiping dust off of your countertops, cabinets and floors even though you rarely open your windows, the problem may be your HVAC system. Leaks in your ductwork can pull dust and other contaminants from your attic or crawl space directly into your air stream. These pollutants don’t just end up on your floors and countertops—they can also be in the air you’re breathing.

Pay attention to unexplained dust buildup and other changes in your indoor air, such as a persistent musty or mildewy smell. If you suspect a problem, have an HVAC professional inspect your ductwork for leaks, gaps and damage. Depending on what they find, the ducts may need to be sealed, repaired or replaced. If rodent damage is a recurring concern, consider installing more durable duct materials like sheet metal or Alumaflex.
